As someone who has been doing their own hair for the last 20 years of my life, I just knew when I had children, doing their hair would be a breeze. Well, that didn’t go as planned. My daughter was basically bald for the first two years of her life, and when her hair did start to grow in, her hair texture threw everything what I thought I knew out the window.

It didn’t like the products that I thought were good products, and it was always dry no matter what I did. It was breaking, and I was constantly having to trim her split ends which meant there was zero length retention for a long, long, long time! I tried purchasing the fancy oils advertised for hair growth, tried the greasing the scalp until it shines every day. None of these did anything.

I wondered “what is up with her hair?”

Turns out, it wasn’t her hair that was the problem. It was me.

I was treating her type 4 kinky, coarse hair like mine. I was trying to get products to work for something they were never made for. I was the problem of my frustration- not her hair.

After spending so much time looking at endless videos, I couldn’t find any textures that actually looked like my daughter’s hair. Most videos out there that claim to be “Type 4” are on the looser end of the spectrum, or those with a silkier surface texture (like mine). My daughter’s hair is on the coarser surface texture side.

I started trying different products- products that I wouldn’t use for myself but I didn’t know where else to start. After many product fails, trial & error I finally discovered what her hair needed. I finally started to see it stay moisturized, and finally started to see it grow and retain length.

Now I’m determined to help other moms struggling with their daughter’s hair, to care for it properly.
